I hate Vi

Seriously, who actually likes to use Vi? Having to “switch modes” just to save a file is stupid. The whole system is annoying. nano/pico are much much better alternatives imo. I know Vi is supposedly more “powerful,” but really… I don’t care. All I want to do is add a line to my crontab. I don’t need it to cook me breakfast too. Plus trying to get it to cook me breakfast, if I did want it to, would probably take a lot longer than just doing so myself, as I’d probably have to switch between command and insert mode 50 times.

    Ditto.
What bothers me most is *why* vi (or emacs) is the *only* editor( “ed” is not an editor … for PC’s ) available on every *nix installation after the first boot. I.e., EVERYBODY knows what a PITA it is but nobody does anything about it!
The second most annoying thing is the way the vi installation varies from *nix to *nix and that the keyboard “Insert” key sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.

BTW, I prefer joe(Joe’s Own Editor) but it is not available for single user mode.

Thanks for letting me vent. I have hated ed, vi & emacs from the get go(circa 1985), but vi most of all … well, vi *might* be second to ed. :)

I second what Ric said, Joe is the best damn editorâ„¢ for any job.
