It’s been a while since I’ve written, so it’s probably well past time for an update.

Sad News:

  • My aunt passed away at the beginning of last month. It was very sudden, and I’m still having trouble dealing with it.
  • My MacBook Pro was urinated on (it’s a long story – email me if you actually want to hear it).

Good News:

  • I was able to replace the MacBook Pro, and the other one was fixed!
  • I was accepted at the Rochester Institute of Technology! I still have some paperwork to do, but as long as I keep my grades where they’ve been (or better) I’ll be set to go there in September.
  • I’m all moved in to my new place. I like it a lot here. I’m in a house with 6 others.
  • Things are well at work. I’m loving Shavlik NetChk Protect. I can remotely push out all kinds of software updates to the machines in an organization. Agile officially announced that anyone who purchases a 1Password license from today on will recieve a free upgrade to version 3.0 (which looks AMAZING so far).

Today = Hardware Failure Day

Today… in a word…. sucked. Not only did we get dumped on by a blizzard, causing me to be home-bound for the day, two pieces of expensive hardware died.
My main switch drops all connections about once every 10 – 20 minutes. I temporary replaced it with my Netgear 24 port monster. I bought a gigabit replacement for it. I’ve wanted to upgrade to gigabit for a while, and this gives me an excuse, but I really wasn’t planning on the expense.
Not only that, my AirPort Extreme (which I use as a NAS and DHCP/DNS server) decided to follow in the switch’s footsteps. Luckily I don’t use it as a router, so haven’t been without internet. But I had to replace it, so I decided to go with a 1TB Time Capsule.
I was planning on buying a new MacBook Pro for when I transfer to RIT but now I’m not so sure that’s going to happen (or, at least it won’t be what I was planning on).

In addition, apparently our furnace is on the fritz. Right before Christmas. Perfect.

Screwed over by MCC

Background: I’m in the 2+2 program with MCC and RIT in an Information Technology major. Basically what this means is that I go to MCC (a community college) and pay much less tuition for the first two years of my college education, and then am automatically transfered to RIT (a very expensive private college) for the other 2nd two years – no application necessary. I’m currently in my 3rd semester at MCC, which should mean that next semester would be my last – and then I’d move on to RIT.

Situation: Registration started a couple days ago, so, because I’m the good student that I am, I started making out my schedule. I only need 4 classes: CIS 209, CSC 206, Statistics, and Advanced Java… none of which I was thrilled about having to take. (more…)

I was informed on Wednesday that one of the businesses that I am doing IT consulting for (through Hurricane Tech.) is closing it’s Rochester office. I very much liked working there and it’s always somewhat depressing when people you know lose their jobs.
Hopefully Hurricane will be able to provide me with new challenging tasks. I’m confident that they won’t let me down.

As some of you may have noticed I started micro-blogging on Twitter again. I just recently setup a WordPress plugin here to have my posts there imported automatically once per day. Pretty cool stuff.

If you’ve been watching that space you may have noticed that I recently decided to leave my position at SideStream Media. This is mostly due to the amount of time I was able to dedicate to SideStream projects. I felt I was doing the company a disservice by staying on and holding a position with any real responsibility with the lack of time I was able to invest. My official last day is going to be July 23rd, 2008, unless we amend our partnership agreement before then. It was a difficult decision to leave, but I think in the end it will work out better for everyone.
It sounds like Jordan will be continuing on with the business, and I wish him the best. There aren’t any hard feelings on my end and I would be willing to help out on future projects.
